Gion- Higashi & Gion- Kobu

In 1813, the fist Geiko and Maiko were licensed to work in Gion, which became the largest hanamachi in Kyoto. It is the location of the Yasaka Shrine and one of the most popular places to view cherry blossoms and autumn leaves..

 

Ponto-Cho

Ponto-Cho is the second largest district in Kyoto, and is basically one long alley that runs for 500 meters (0.3 miles). It is bordered on one side by the Kamo river and by the Takase-gawa canal on the other.

 

Kamishichiken

Kamishichiken came about after seven teahouses were built from the leftovers of the Kitano Shrine. The name means, literally "Seven houses in the upper area" and it is also the home of Saihonji (a Buddhist convent).

 

Miyagawa-Cho

Located on the east bank of the Kamo river, Miyagawa-cho has always been a popular entertainment area. It boasts several theatres, including the prestigious Minamiza Kabuki Theater.
